Lets deal with one of the more common realities of life. If there isn’t an axiom more self-evident than that life isn’t fair. Sometimes, when you are doing everything you can to make things go your way, something totally out of your control will punch you in the stomach. And it just doesn’t seem fair. Guess what-sometimes it isn’t fair, and that’s the very painful truth about our lives. Fairness is not necessarily part of the bargain.
People I know have lost money, relationships, their homes, and even their sense of well-being. It seems that the pressure of the real world, which many of us didn’t see until this recession, takes its toll on all of us.
And no matter who you are, there will be times when someone does something so unjust that your head spins for days, weeks, or even longer. You live with these little thoughts of disbelief that these people, who you trusted with every fiber of your being, turned on you. And their reasoning was spurious at best.
What’s important to realize is that life will always be unfair for someone somewhere. But unfairness is what makes everyone unique. It makes you different from anyone else. You’ll stop asking why are they richer than me? How come my child is awful in sports? You won’t be asking for government intervention to fix what’s “broken”.
So, instead of complaining, use the unfairness in your life, and work around them. Use what could be considered a disadvantage, to your advantage. There have been many examples throughout history of people who have, against all odds, made themselves into a success story. What made them unique was the reason for their success, not failure. They didn’t blame others for their issues, and instead took action regardless of the circumstances. We need to become the best we can be, and not compare ourselves to others.
Yes, many times life is not easy. And yet it is precisely because of the difficulties that you’re able to make life great.
Remember, each one of us were given life as a gift. And when we are born we come into possession of something that is not ours by deserving, but something that has been given to us. Therefore, the truth is we have reasons to be grateful no matter what our circumstances. So, do not think in terms of justice because life is not fair, because it is rooted in grace. Rather believe that the sheer wonder of aliveness is an unending source of joy and gratitude.
