Everyone wants to live life on their own terms but this is often easier said than done. Family or societal pressures sometimes prevent people from carrying out their real dreams. It’s time to live life the way that you want to live it.
To begin with, think about the times in your life when you have been happy. Knowing what you were doing during your happiest moments will give you insight into what you should really be doing with your life.
Set goals and plan to achieve them. Most people have goals, but they don’t always act in ways that allow them to achieve their goals. If, for example, you want to quit your job to travel the world, break that job down into smaller, more manageable steps. Determine how much money you’ll have to save to do it. Research the different countries you want to visit. Small steps seem more achievable than big goals.
Meet other people with similar goals. One of the most important aspects of a successful life is interacting with people who have goals that are similar to ours. This creates a support network that allows you to thrive.
Be prepared for resistance. If you want to live life on your own terms, you may meet some resistance from family or co-workers, especially if your goals are outside the norm. Think about how you will respond to this before it happens. This will prevent you from making rash statements that could hurt someone’s feelings.
And remember that there is always something to be grateful for. No matter what your circumstances, as dark as they can seem at times, there is always something worth appreciating. Often the most important times to be grateful are during the most difficult times. Gratitude is a powerful emotion. When you are truly grateful in the moment, it’s impossible to feel fear or stress or anxiety, or any of those negative emotions that keep us for experiencing our potential. Allow gratitude to take over.
And when you do, you will be that much closer to living life on your terms.
