Day 183 – A Spoonful of Gratitude for Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins was originally a series of children’s books written by P. L. Travers and originally illustrated by Mary Shepard, about a magical English nanny, Mary Poppins.  The East wind blows her to Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, London to the Banks’ house where she cares for the Banks children.  The children have more magical adventures with their strict, cross but magical Mary Poppins than they ever dreamed possible!

As early as 1938, Walt Disney tried to buy film rights to the story from P.L. Travers, and finally succeeded in 1961. Those timeless songs were written by the Sherman Brothers. Mary Poppins is portrayed by Julie Andrews, with Dick Van Dyke as Bert. This movie, released in 1964 includes adventures from all over the Mary Poppins books that were in existence at the time, and some that Disney and his associates created themselves.

It was a huge success as Julie Andrews won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Mary Poppins and the movie also won Oscars for Best Film Editing, Original Music Score, Best Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and Best Visual Effects, and received a total of 13 nominations.

In 2004, Disney Theatrical produced a stage musical adaptation in the West End theatre. The stage musical was transferred to Broadway in 2006.

What we should realize is that Mary Poppins is a supernatural character who represents perfection because she is capable of maintaining and developing the most important quality of childhood –the ability to see magic in everything.

And we have the power to maintain this special magic into our lives today–the ability to be grateful for everything we have in our life right now.

For we don’t have the ability to fly like Mary Poppins, but we have the ability to spread our wings and bring more of what we truly want into our lives.

I had the pleasure of attending the show in San Diego at the Civic Theater. And it was truly magical!

The costumes and staging made the production that more believable. And lead actress Steffanie Leigh captures the absolute essence of Mary Poppins and performs it….perfectly. I would definitely recommend seeing Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical.

All I can say is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious AND

The moment you open your heart you’ll be free

Chim chim-in-ey, chim chim-in-ey

Chim chim cher-oo!

You have all the answers just look inside you
